This positions you as an authority and expert.

Ex. “Hi, my name is … and I am the creator and author of … (your site) and this is my life…”

When someone asks you “Tell me about yourself… or “Tell me your story,” what do you say?
Ex. “If you are anything like me…

It’s just a little teaser that introduces you but it intrigues them to keep watching.

Here are some tips and questions to ask yourself:

Introduce your family (people love to relate on a deeper level!)
This shows some trust too.
Introduce your pets!
Where did you go to school and what did you study?
Where are you from?
What are some jobs you’ve had?
What are some of your hobbies?
Are you a sports fan?

The point of this part of the video is to develop a connection with your viewer. You want them thinking “Yeah, I’ve been there,” or “I can totally relate” and especially “This person is real!”

Give them the “REASON WHY” you are making this video. This can be because you have advice to give or a passion to share, etc.

Ex. “The reason why I am making this video for you is because….

Ex. “That’s why I’m here. I want to help others _______ because ________ (your previous problem).

Ex. “I’d love to get to know you! Stop by and say hi on my blog: ______. See you on the net!”

“Hi, my name is… and I am the creator and author of…(your site) and this is my life…”’
“If you are anything like me… (You love your family, camping, sports, pets, video games…etc.)
“The reason why I am making this video for you is because…. (Your problem)
“That’s why I’m here. I want to help others …(your solution) because …(your previous problem).
“I’d love to get to know you! Stop by and say hi on my blog: …. See you on the net!”

Keep it under 5 min
Smile! Relax and let your personality shine through.
Non-perfection (yes you read that right!) Just let it flow and don’t worry so much!

People want to know who you are and how you can help them. Tell them a little bit about who you are, where you are from, what you are doing and where you are going. Most importantly, let them know exactly how you can help them, and tell them exactly how to access your help.

You can think of this “About Me” video like a chapter book…with only 3 or so chapters.

Note: Do your best to mix up the shots. “Show” your viewer instead of telling them. That rule alone will make your video stand out from the rest!

Here’s the transcript of the video (for those of you who love to read!) =)

Hi there this is Stacia Hopkins and in this video, I am super excited to share with you how to create your about me video.

Now, creating an about me video might not seem like a very big deal but let me tell you, this is a really big deal, why? Because your about me video is basically your first impression to the entire online world. Your about me video begins to establish your brand, position you as an authority and expert, and is really your introduction to the entire internet.

So, I’m excited to share with you an exact outline and steps that you need to take to really make your about me video stand out and make that first impression really great.

So, let’s jump right in to the five elements that you need to be sure to include in your about me video.

So here we go. The first step is your opening statement alright? And this might not seem like a huge deal but really it’s one of the most important parts of your about me video because right off the bat your positioning yourself as an authority and expert.

Now you might be saying “yea your crazy I’m not actually an authority or expert on anything” well that’s beside the point. Basically we want to play on your strengths here. So, to elaborate on, that let me give you an example. Here you could say “hi my name is Stacia and I am the creator and author of staciahopkins.com” so, that was pretty easy right? But just with that sentence, you’re positioning yourself and most people will do that and this is one thing that’ll really make your about me video stand out. So basically in this step you’re going to state your name and then tell them a little tiny bit of credentials basically ok? So creator and author is really great phrasing and you could even say “I’m the creator of” and you could name your product if you have a product or you could just insert your website there that’s probably the easiest thing to do and the other thing that you could do if you don’t even have a website up is you could tell them that your contributing author to something. You know you could write a testimonial for someone and basically say “hi my name is so and so and I’m a contributing author for” and then insert the name of the person or blog that you wrote the testimonial for.

So that’s pretty easy and one last thing before we move on to the next step is to remember to keep this step nice and short. No one really wants to know every credential that you’ve ever had. This is just a one sentence five seconds or less little blast about who you are.

Alright so onto our next step which is, your background. So basically this is going to be you answering the question “tell me about yourself” or “tell me your story” this will be what you will say when someone in real life would ask you that question.

Alright so here is an example of what you could start off with. You could say if you’re anything like me and then you would go in to all the things that relate you to other people. Basically this is just a little teaser that introduces you but intrigues them to keep watching. Basically you’re building your relationship here with the person watching your video.

So here’s some tips and questions that you can ask yourself when your preparing this part of your about me video. So first, introduce your family because people love to relate on a deeper level and this shows a lot of trust too basically shows that you’re willing to put yourself out there on the internet. You could introduce your pets, introduce any members of your family even your goldfish right? Just make it fun, you could tell them where you went to school, what you studied, you could share where you’re from, what jobs you’ve had, what hobbies you have, and even sports that you like to play or teams. These are just a small fraction of the things that you could introduce about yourself but I hope that gets the juices flowing about where you can go with this section.

Now the point of this whole entire second section of your video, your background section, is to develop a connection with your viewer. You want them thinking “yea I’ve been there or I can totally relate to that” or, and most especially “this person is real” ok? We don’t want you looking like some sort of celebrity that is untouchable. You want to look real and human and like they can totally relate to you.

Alright so onto the next section which is the problem. Ok so in this section you’re going to basically give your viewers a reason why you’re making this video. And basically this is probably going to be introducing your passion ok? Introducing why you’re making the video literally so you’re going to say “I’m making this video for you because” and that is how you would start off this section.

Ok so now I’m going to go on to the solution part. I know I didn’t go over that completely but it will make sense when I put it all together in just a minute. So the next section is the solution to your problem. So for instance you would say “this is why I am here, I want to help others like you because” and then you would state your previous problem.

Ok now the next section and final section is your call to action alright? Sometimes lovingly called the CTA. So what you’d say here is “I’d love to get to know you so go ahead and stop by and say hi on my blog which is “and then name it and then I’ll see you around on the net. So it’s pretty easy. So here we go now we are going to put all of this together ok?

So here’s just a quick example that I’ll fill in with my own experiences ok? So you can get a feel of what’s going on, obviously it’s not complete by any means. I would definatly fill this in more but I just want to give you kind of an overview and example. Ok so here we go.

Short Example

“Hi my name is Stacia Hopkins and I’m the creator and author of staciahopkins.com and this is my life. If your anything like me, you love your family and then I can show my family, you love camping, sports, you love spending time with your family, and being about to do the things that you love most. Now the reason why I’m making this video for you is because two years ago when I got started online trying to market my business, I thought that it was going to be simple and that I was going to be making money within months. We that’s why I’m here because I want to help others like you who are getting started online, decrease your learning curve so that you don’t have to go thru all the same hurdles and spend all the money that I have. I want to make getting online and marketing your business easy.  So I’d love to get to know you stop by and say hi on my blog at staciahopkins.com and I’ll see you around on the net.” Alright so that was a pretty simple overview of creating your about me video.

So now when you download your PDF that comes with this video, you’ll be able to get this complete example that I’ve written out. Basically it’s my story using the five steps alright? And you can use it to write your own. I won’t go thru all that in this video, you can read it, but I certainly hope that it helps you be able to create your about me video and structure it in this way that will really make your first impression great.

So that last couple things to keep in mind are some goals ok? The goals for this video include keeping it under five minutes. Yes under five minutes, especially under ten, do not go longer than that. People will not sit and listen to your blabber on for that long even if it’s interesting ok? So under five minutes, include all your fun bloopers and that goes along with this third one here which is non-perfection. Yes you read that right, you want to just let it flow and don’t worry so much ok? People love to see that real factor remember when we were talking about that? You want to be real for people. Now this middle bullet, remember to smile ok? People want to work with you when you are a happy person and letting your personality thru. Don’t just be a talking head with a bad attitude ok? So that last little bit here is your summary and basically you want people to know who you are and how you can help them ok? This isn’t so much about you even though it is your about me video. People want to know what you can do for them. So you’re going to tell them who you are, where you’re from, what you’re doing, and where you’re going. But most importantly, let them know exactly how you can help them. This is the biggie right there ok? And then with the CTA, the call to action, you’re going to tell them how they can access that help.

Ok so you could think of your entire about me video basically as a chapter book that only has three to five chapters’ right? And you just break it up into little sections but you don’t have to state “ok so here’s my opening statement and now I’m going into my background.” You just flow right thru them.

Ok so here is a large note for you to remember… lots of asterisks and stars. Do your best to mix up the shots. You want to show your viewer instead of tell them ok? That one rule alone, if you apply that to this about me video and any other video that you make, will make your videos stand out from the rest.

Basically you’re going to use shots outside of yourself talking at the camera. If you want an example of all this that I’m talking about, here is target=”_blank”>my first about me video. And I have come a long way since I shot this video but I want you to feel free to use it to get an idea or two about how to structure your video and then also the idea of showing instead of telling ok? What I don’t want you to do is stand in front of a white wall and talk about yourself for five minutes and then turn off the camera and upload it. What we are after here is you could see, right here I’m throwing a lacrosse ball. I am showing people that I love lacrosse and this is one of the things that they could relate to you know. That they love sports too and I’m active and there is other sections in the video where I am hiking, I’m playing my instrument, and doing all sorts of things ok? So I’m mixing up the shots.

Ok so one last thing to know is that this isn’t any sort of rigid thing that you have to follow, you can follow it loosely and just by doing that you are going to have a terrific about me video that people will thoroughly enjoy watching.

I look forward to watching your about me video!
